Charolotte Mason Educational Notes and Goals

  • Understand the balance of keeping to a schedule and holding to a structure while allowing for all "unscheduled" learning experiences that can feasibly be accomplished also.
  • Main Focus is on Religion, Respect, Responsibility, Relationships (Living a Christian Life)
  • Relationships: great human relationships, relationships of love and service, of authority and obedience, of reverence and pity and kindness, relationships with friends, family, and neighbors, to cause and to country, and to the past and to the present.
  • Raise the children in the most simple and domestic way possible
  • place great confidence in the kids in all things
  • Measure progress by what the child knows by look, name, and habitat in the number of living and growing things.
  • Unless the METHOD of teaching allows the child the opportunity to establish relations with many different things, a gallon of teaching will only result in an ounce of learning.
  • The teacher's business is to indicate, stimulate, direct, and constrain to the acquirement of knowledge.
  • Children must be left alone to ruminate with their own thoughts to truly understand and attach to something of knowledge.
  • We can not do the learning or growing for the kids but we can provide what they need for growth which is ideas.
  • The less we do for a child the more they will do for themselves.
  • This style of education is not Un-schooling it is done with a definite plan towards self-education.
  • Atmosphere : Open Communications, christian life style, mother is the foundation of the home, physical closeness, and so on
  • Pity is a virtue if it cares for another, but pity can turn to self-pity which is not a virtue. Truth telling is a virtue, but if it is blunt and tactless and spoken without love than it is not a virtue.
  • Stop telling and always warning the children...let them experience natural consequences to be able to learn.Give fewer warnings, set up natural consequences for things and they will attach you have told them and do it once they realize the consequences.
  • Practice Purity in what you read and view
  • Use narration and whole books
  • Power of attention can show an educated man.
  • You can not retell what you do not "KNOW"
